The symbolism of the hammock and the transition of the soul
In some indigenous communities, when a person dies, their body is placed in a hammock in the fetal or extended position, as it symbolizes the womb or placenta of the earth. The Wayana-Apalai of French Guiana, Suriname and Brazil consider that the soul of the deceased leaves the body and follows the hammock's ties to the roof of the house. The hammock is suspended from two poles or shrubs planted in a pit, and the deceased's personal belongings are placed around it. The pit may be dug under a miniature hut created for the purpose, or in the deceased's own hut. The hut is then usually abandoned and sometimes burnt down. Among the Yanomamis in northern Brazil, the deceased are cremated in their hammocks and then buried.
